Surface conductivity of Mercury provides current closure and may affect magnetospheric symmetry

چکیده
We study what effect a possible surface conductivity of Mercury has on the closure of magnetospheric currents by making six runs with a quasi-neutral hybrid simulation. The runs are otherwise identical but use different synthetic conductivity models: run 1 has a fully conducting planet, run 2 has a poorly conducting planet (σ=10−8−1 m−1) and runs 3–6 have one of the hemispheres either in the dawn-dusk or day-night directions, conducting well, the other one being conducting poorly. Although the surface conductivity is not known from observations, educated guesses easily give such conductivity values that magnetospheric currents may close partly within the planet, and as the conductivity depends heavily on the mineral composition of the surface, the possibility of significant horizontal variations cannot be easily excluded. The simulation results show that strong horizontal variations may produce modest magnetospheric asymmetries. Beyond the hybrid simulation, we also briefly discuss the possibility that in the nightside there may be a lack of surface electrons to carry downward current, which may act as a further source of surface-related magnetospheric asymmetry.

To understand the mechanism of superconductivity in unconventional super onductors is one of the big challenges in the field of superconductivity. Based on the BCS theory, there is a direct relation between the pairing mechanism and the symmetry of the order parameter. Therefore, identification of the structure of the superconducting gap or the order parameter provides key information on the pa...
متن کاملModular model for Mercury's magnetospheric magnetic field confined within the average observed magnetopause
Accurate knowledge of Mercury's magnetospheric magnetic field is required to understand the sources of the planet's internal field. We present the first model of Mercury's magnetospheric magnetic field confined within a magnetopause shape derived from Magnetometer observations by the MErcury Surface, Space ENvironment, GEochemistry, and Ranging spacecraft. The field of internal origin is approx...
متن کاملEvaluation of Cadmium, Arsenic and Mercury Concentrations in the Drinking Water Distribution Network in Ardabil City in 2018
Background & objectives: Heavy metals enter water sources in many ways and cause hazards such as poisoning and carcinogenesis in the living organisms. This study aimed to investigate the concentration of heavy metals (arsenic, mercury, and cadmium) in the Yamchi Reservoir Dam and Ardabil drinking water distribution network in high and low rainfall seasons in 2018. Methods: In this cross-sectio...
متن کاملLocal time effects in satellite estimates of electromagnetic induction transfer functions
[1] The current satellite magnetic missions offer new opportunities to determine the electrical conductivity of the Earth. However, satellites are nearly stationary in local time and therefore sample the inducing and induced fields quite differently than geomagnetic observatories, which rotate with the Earth. We show that estimates of induction transfer functions obtained from CHAMP magnetic da...
متن کاملMercuric Chloride Effects on Root Water Transport in Aspen Seedlings.
HgCl(2) (0.1 mM) reduced pressure-induced water flux and root hydraulic conductivity in the roots of 1-year-old aspen (Populus tremuloides Michx.) seedlings by about 50%. The inhibition was reversed with 50 mM mercaptoethanol. Mercurial treatment reduced the activation energy of water transport in the roots from 10.82 +/- 0.700 kcal mol(-1) to 6.67 +/- 0.193 kcal mol(-1) when measured over the ...
